CP502: How to Revise Your CP500 Instalment

This article summarizes public LHDN rules for educational reference only. It is not official LHDN advice and cannot replace consultation with a licensed Malaysian tax agent. Always verify the latest figures via the official LHDN MyTax portal.

What Form CP502 is for

Your CP500 notice is based entirely on last year's figures, so it rarely matches this year's reality exactly — especially if your freelance income has genuinely grown or shrunk since your last Form B assessment. Form CP502 is the official LHDN mechanism that lets you ask for your CP500 instalment estimate to be revised, either downward if income has fallen, or upward if you would rather pay more now than face a large lump-sum balance when you file Form B. For background on how the original estimate is set, see our guide to what CP500 is.

When to revise upward vs downward

A downward revision makes sense if you have genuinely lost a major client, scaled back your freelance work, or otherwise expect this year's net profit to come in meaningfully lower than last year's. An upward revision is worth considering if your business has grown significantly — paying slightly more per instalment through the year is often easier to manage than one large balance (baki cukai) due at Form B filing time, and can reduce the risk of a cash-flow crunch in June or July.

The 30-day deadline

Form CP502 must be submitted within 30 days of the date shown on your original CP500 notice. Missing this window generally means you are stuck with the original instalment schedule for the rest of the year, even if your income has clearly changed — so it is worth reviewing your CP500 notice as soon as it arrives, rather than setting it aside.

How to submit it

CP502 can typically be submitted either electronically through LHDN's MyTax e-Filing portal, or by post to your LHDN branch, depending on what LHDN currently offers for your file. You will generally need to state your revised estimated chargeable income for the year and a brief explanation of why it has changed. A specific, verifiable reason — a named client contract ending, a documented drop in orders, or a clear change in your business — is treated more favourably than a vague or unsupported estimate.

What happens after you submit

Once LHDN processes an approved revision, your remaining instalments for the year are recalculated across whatever is left of the six-payment CP500 schedule, so the adjustment is spread over your remaining instalments rather than applied retroactively to ones already paid. Keep in mind that revising sharply downward without a genuine basis can itself draw scrutiny if your eventual Form B assessment shows a large gap between the revised estimate and your actual tax payable — so CP502 is best used when the change in your income is real and, ideally, something you could support with records if asked.
